Learn how to use natural light to advantage when working on outdoors black & white portraits. The old master painters had a special word - chiaroscuro - (meaning 'light-dark') for the dramatic quality of shadow in portraits. This concept, as it relates to black and white portraiture, will be fully explained. The importance of 'catch lights' in eyes & 'bokeh' (for dreamy, soft backgrounds) will also be addressed, as will the advantage of shooting in 'open shade'. Portraits will be taken with black and white conversion in mind, but can also be enjoyed in colour as well. Come along and discover how to add mood, artistry and drama to your outdoor portraits !

My two sons both moved to Arizona for work and we missed them so much we immediately began trying to create a path for us to move to the Phoenix area. This painting was an attempt to paint desert themed flora to feel closer to them. We now live in a suburb of Phoenix and love the unique beauty found in the desert!

I painted Apple Blossoms for a friend who had gifted me the watercolor paper she had purchased for a family member who decided they didn?t want it. Since she would not take payment I asked what I could paint for her. Flowers she said. So, I used the 9 x 12 Canson 140 lb block she gave me to paint this.
